It’s July in Valdez Harbor, and it’s a misty 50 degrees.

Me:  I can smell the harbor, the nets, the faint odor of diesel, a bit of old fish.

My dad and I joked about movie theaters selling alcohol when we were eating dinner. The local 11 o’clock news just ran a story about a local movie theatre doing just that.

I. CAN’T. EVEN.

Me:  The Beartooth theatre-pub is a great place up this way.  Excellent microbrew and food.

When the ground is frozen, there can be no fresh produce. A lot of Russian food is born of this frequent deprivation, as they are forced to abuse what ingredients they do have—pickled cabbage, hog fat, mayonnaise, dill. Small wonder that vodka is a constant companion to food. There is, however, at least one beautiful offspring of all this wintry want: Stroganina, frozen ribbons of fresh-water whitefish, a staple of the Russian arctic.

Me:  It’s not bad.  I ate plenty of it last June.
